3M Rainbow™ Demonstration Script (16 MB of RAM Required)
DESCRIPTION:
The 3M Rainbow™ Desktop Color Proofing System consists of a dye sublimation printer and the 3M Rainbow software. This demonstration will highlight features of the Rainbow system without the existence of the actual printer. All features of the software are fully functional except that the software prints to a "virtual" printer.
DEMO HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS (MINIMUM):
Apple Macintosh Quadra or Power Macintosh with 16 MB RAM and 85 MB of free hard disk space.
DEMO HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS (PREFERRED):
Apple Power Macintosh with 32 MB RAM and 120 MB of free hard disk space.
INSTALLATION OF THE DEMO SOFTWARE:
1. Make sure that you have at least 85 MB of free hard disk space.
2. Drag the folder "3M Rainbow Ctlr v3.0 Demo" from the CD-ROM to the selected
hard disk to make a copy of it.
3. Select "Chooser" in the Apple Menu. Turn AppleTalk on (Active) if it was off.
Close the Chooser. AppleTalk is required because the Rainbow software acts as a
print spooler/server and will register itself on the network as a LaserWriter
printer.
STARTING THE DEMO:
1. Open the folder "3M Rainbow Ctlr v3.0 Demo" on the hard disk.
2. Double click on the "3M Rainbow Ctlr v3.0 Demo" application. The Rainbow Ctlr is
a Fat Binary application, so it will run on either 68K or Power Macintosh
computers. A startup screen will be displayed for a number of seconds while the
application initializes. After initialization, you will see 2 windows titled "3M
Rainbow Job Queue" and "3M Rainbow Job Log".
GENERAL OVERVIEW DEMO:
This demonstration will show you the basic capabilities of the 3M Rainbow system. You will be instructed on how to enter a job into the system and then watch it progress through the system.
1. Click on the 3M Rainbow Job Queue window, if it is not active. This window
contains status information about the 3M Rainbow Proofer and all jobs waiting or
currently processing. The Rainbow software turns the Macintosh into a print
server for all other computers on the network.
2. If you have other Macintosh computers on the network, you can open the Chooser
on one of those machines and see that the 3M Rainbow is available as a
LaserWriter printer. If you don't have other Macintoshes connected on the
network, skip this step.
3. Select the "Proof File…" command in the File Menu.
4. Select the file "PostScript Example" from within the 3M Rainbow Ctlr folder.
5. The Job Parameters dialog box allows you to select media type and size. Move the
mouse over the pop-up menu for Color Targets and push and hold down the mouse
button. This is a list of all the color targets which 3M supports for the color
simulation of various printing processes. These targets are based on 3M's
extensive knowledge of proofing gained from being an industry leader with the
3M Matchprint™ Proofing System. Select the color target titled "4302
Commercial v3.0" and release the mouse button.
6. Click the OK button. This will enter a new job into the Job Queue window. You
will see the software begin processing this PostScript file and simulate the
printing of the proof. When the job is finished, the results will be placed in the
Job Log window. You can either wait for the processing of this job to complete or
you can continue with the demonstration. The Rainbow software uses
multi-threading to allow the RIP to proceed while you do other things.
7. Click the mouse over the Job Log window. The Job Log window records the
results of all jobs which have been processed by the system. If any errors have
occurred, these errors are also recorded. The information in this log can also
be imported into a spreadsheet application for analysis or customer billing.
8. Click the right arrow scroll control to see the error message of the 3rd job in the
log. You will see that the software has recorded the name of the missing font.
This can save you several minutes or even hours of tracking down what font is
missing with other manufacturer's printers.
COLOR CALIBRATION DEMO:
Color Calibration allows you to alter the 3M color tables slightly to account for differences between lots of dye sublimation ribbon or differences between printers. 3M makes color calibration settings available to all customers via our 24 hour, toll free, bulletin board service. Customers can use these files 'as is' or further modify them. This demonstration will show you what a typical color calibration looks like and how it could be modified.
1. Select the "Color Calibration…" command in the File Menu.
2. Click the check boxes under the "Show" column for the magenta, yellow, and black
colors to turn off curve display for those colors. You will then be given handles on
the Cyan color curve. Place the mouse pointer over one of these handles, press the
mouse button and drag the handle. The curve will move and the numbers will be
updated. Release the mouse button. Normally, you would alter these curves to
correct the color response of the individual colors in order to match the reference
system.
3. Click the "Done" button and then click the "No" button when asked about saving the
changes.
FONT MANAGEMENT DEMO:
If you are like many Publishing Professionals, you use hundreds of different fonts from numerous vendors. You may store these fonts in many different locations or on a single central server. The Font Management feature of Rainbow is designed to be flexible enough to allow you to access these fonts without changing the way you work. This demonstration will show you how you can setup the Rainbow system to use fonts from any where you may have them stored.
1. Select the "Font Management…" command in the File Menu. The list of fonts
currently available to the Rainbow software is shown.
2. Click on the "Rebuild" button. The Rainbow software will search the System
folder and the Rainbow folder for PostScript fonts.
3. Click the "Add" button. If you have fonts stored in other locations, such as on a
server, you could find that location and then click the "Add All" button. For this
demonstration, click the "Cancel" button.
4. Click the "Done" button to finish Font Management.
REMOTE PROOFING CAPABILITIES:
The Rainbow System's flexibility is a key element which enables the Rainbow to be used in Remote Proofing applications with ease and total automation. The Rainbow system can used with point-to-point communications links or with links which simply bridge together 2 remote networks. This demonstration will show you how a communications link can easily submit jobs to the Rainbow system for proofing.
1. While the Rainbow Ctlr software is running, select "Finder" in the Application
menu on the right hand of the Menu Bar.
2. Hold down the Option key and then drag the file "Photoshop Example" onto the
"3M Rainbow Auto Print" Folder within the 3M Rainbow Ctlr v3.0 Demo window.
3. Switch back to the Rainbow software by selecting the Rainbow Ctlr application
in the Application menu. Notice that the 3M Rainbow software has automatically
entered the job into the Job Queue and proceeded to process the job. Using either
the AutoPrint folder or Apple Events, highly automated remote proofing can be
set up. The process can be simple or very complex utilizing compression and
encryption utilities in sequence before the Rainbow system.
QUITTING THE RAINBOW DEMO:
1. Select the "Quit" command in the File Menu. If jobs are still being processed by
the Rainbow System, you will be asked to confirm that you actually do want to
quit. Choose the "Quit Now" button to confirm your desire to quit.
Thank you for taking the time to review the 3M Rainbow System. For additional information, please see the 3M Rainbow "Read Me" file.
